Giclee Prints – Papers

Papers

Some of our favourite papers for giclee prints are made by Hahnemuhle, one of the oldest paper mills in Europe (they’ve been making paper in Germany since 1584!).  Hahnemuhle has been producing high quality paper for more than 420 years.   For a number of years now they have been supplying their traditional artist’s papers in a coated version for creative digital artists and photographers.  The natural structure and elegance combined with the special surface coating for inkjet printers enables unique reproductions to be made displaying an unrivalled colour gamut and brilliancy.  The three papers We use most often are:

Permajet’s Museum Heritage is a heavyweight board at 310gsm.  It is velvety smooth with a fine surface texture.  It is by some way the most popular paper I use for giclee prints.  It has a beautiful feel, holds detail superbly and has excellent colour rendition.

Chris uses this paper himself for his own work and would highly recommend it for most image types.  One area where it tends not to excel is with predominantly dark and low-key monochrome images.  Other than that it is a reliable and consistent paper that gives giclee prints a feel of genuine quality that both you and your customers will love.

Torchon, the word is taken from the French and means “coarse structure”.  The special surface texture of this bright white paper is a reminder of this.  It can capture the timeless original beauty and three dimensionality of artwork in its own special way.

Lighter weight than German Etching at 285gsm it also has a brighter white base.  As such it works well with images that have higher contrast and also with images where a more textured surface is required.

Photo Rag 308gsm.  Photo Rag is the most popular paper chosen by photographers & artists to create high quality fine art prints.  The fine, smooth surface and feel of Photo Rag make this paper very versatile and it is ideal for printing both black and white and colour photographs and art reproductions with impressive pictorial depth.

The tonal range possible with this paper is very impressive along with exellent colour rendition.  It has a very smooth matt surface, the white tone lies between natural and bright white.
